Course Overview

The course “Scalpel vs Medication: Common Dilemmas in Exotic Mammal Medicine” provides a comprehensive guide for veterinarians handling exotic mammals, focusing on key decision-making between medical and surgical approaches. Led by an experienced specialist, it covers diagnostics, therapeutic methods, and surgical techniques, enriched with real case studies.


Lesson 1: Therapeutic Challenges in Rabbits

  • Otitis:
    Classification, diagnostics (X-ray, CT, ultrasound), treatment choices, surgical vs medical management, complications, and reversibility of vestibular symptoms.
  • Liver disorders:
    Clinical signs, diagnostics, and treatment of liver conditions including liver lobe torsion and eimeriosis.
  • GI syndromes (GI Stasis):
    Approaches to varying severities, differentiation between obstruction and non-obstruction, techniques such as orogastric decompression.

Lesson 2: Rabbits’ Oncological Problems

  • Thymomas:
    Staging, classification, diagnostics, sternotomy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, survival outcomes.
  • Adenocarcinomas & metastatic tumors:
    Identification, TNM classification, treatment of mammary, uterine, and other adenocarcinomas.
  • Testicular tumors:
    Clinical signs, diagnostics, and alternatives to castration including radiation therapy.
  • Includes case studies for applied learning.

Lesson 3: Rats Problems

  • Mammary gland disorders:
    Diagnostics and treatment of adenocarcinoma, galactocele; guidance on thoracic imaging and tumor grading.
  • Ear & Zymbal gland pathologies:
    Diagnostics (CT, X-ray, endoscopy), bulla flushing, lateral bullotomy.
  • Pododermatitis:
    Etiology, classification, treatment, and surgical options for severe cases.

Lesson 4: Ferrets’ Oncological Problems

  • Lymphoma:
    Stages, forms (alimentary, multicentric, cutaneous), COP protocol, Wisconsin-Madison protocol, radiation therapy, diagnostics.
  • Adrenal gland disorders:
    Etiology, clinical signs, diagnostics, treatment of adrenal hyperplasia, pheochromocytoma, adrenal tumors; Suprelorin guidance.
  • Insulinomas:
    Diagnostics, conservative management, surgery, hypoglycemia control, long-term care.

Lesson 5: Guinea Pig Problems

  • Urinary Stones:
    Classification, predisposing factors, diagnostics (urinalysis, imaging), treatment including surgery, prevention strategies.
  • Lymphoma:
    Clinical signs, staging, diagnostics (CT, blood tests), chemotherapy.
  • Thyroid gland tumors:
    Hyperthyroidism, thyroid neoplasms, diagnostics, surgery, long-term management.
